How to Improve Bike Mileage in India

Better mileage usually comes from several small improvements working together—not from one magic trick or fuel additive.

Bike mileage depends on traffic, engine condition, tyre pressure, riding style, road quality, load and weather. Two riders using the same motorcycle can get very different fuel economy.

The safest way to improve mileage is to make the bike mechanically healthy and ride it smoothly. Avoid shortcuts that compromise safety or damage the engine.

Measure your current mileage first

Before changing anything, calculate your real-world mileage using the tank-to-tank method:

  • Fill the tank to a consistent level.
  • Reset the trip meter.

Frequent changes in speed waste fuel. On open roads, maintain a stable pace instead of repeated acceleration and braking.

Very high speed increases aerodynamic drag sharply, so mileage usually drops as speed rises.

5Avoid unnecessary idling

A running engine consumes fuel even when the bike is stationary. At long railway crossings or extended stops, switching off the engine can save fuel.

Do not switch off at every short signal; use common sense and prioritise safe restarting.

6Service the bike on time

Old engine oil, a dirty air filter, worn spark plug or incorrect valve clearance can reduce efficiency.

Follow the service schedule in the owner’s manual and ask the workshop to diagnose any sudden mileage drop.

7Keep the chain clean and adjusted

A dry, dirty or overly tight chain increases friction. A loose chain can affect smooth power delivery and wear sprockets faster.

Clean, lubricate and adjust the chain according to the manufacturer’s recommendation.

8Check for dragging brakes

If a brake remains slightly engaged, the wheel resists movement and fuel economy falls. The wheel may also become hot.

Have brake drag checked immediately because it affects both mileage and safety.

9Remove unnecessary load

Extra weight requires more energy to move, especially in stop-start traffic. Remove items you do not need from luggage boxes or carriers.

Large windscreens and bulky accessories can also increase drag.

10Use the recommended fuel

Use fuel from reliable stations and follow the octane recommendation in the owner’s manual.

Premium fuel does not automatically improve mileage in an engine designed for regular petrol.

11Keep the air filter healthy

A clogged air filter restricts airflow and can affect combustion. Dusty conditions may require more frequent inspection.

Clean or replace the filter only as recommended. Improper cleaning can damage some filter types.

12Avoid riding the clutch

Keeping the clutch partially engaged causes slip, wastes engine power and wears the clutch plates.

Release the clutch fully after shifting and avoid holding the bike on slopes using half-clutch.

13Plan your route

A slightly longer but smoother route can sometimes use less fuel than a shorter route with heavy congestion and repeated stops.

Combine errands into one trip and avoid peak traffic where practical.

14Do not over-warm the engine

Modern fuel-injected motorcycles generally do not need long stationary warm-up periods. Start the bike, allow a brief moment for oil circulation and ride gently until it reaches normal temperature.

Extended idling wastes fuel.

15Avoid mileage-hurting modifications

Oversized tyres, open exhausts, altered gearing and badly tuned intake modifications can reduce efficiency and reliability.

Keep the motorcycle close to manufacturer specifications unless changes are professionally engineered.
