How to compare running cost

Use a simple per-kilometre method.

Fuel cost per km = Fuel price ÷ Real-world efficiency

For an electric car:

Electricity cost per km = Electricity tariff ÷ Real-world km per kWh

Always use your local fuel price, home electricity tariff and realistic efficiency. Do not rely only on brochure claims.

Illustrative monthly example

Suppose you drive 1,500 km per month. Even a difference of ₹2 per kilometre changes monthly spending by ₹3,000 and annual spending by ₹36,000.

However, a vehicle with lower running cost may cost several lakh more to purchase. The savings become meaningful only after the extra purchase price is recovered.

Calculate break-even distance

To compare two variants, first calculate the upfront price difference. Then divide it by the per-kilometre saving.

Break-even distance = Extra purchase price ÷ Saving per km

For example, if one variant costs ₹1,20,000 more and saves ₹2 per kilometre, the simple break-even distance is 60,000 km. This does not include finance interest, service differences or resale value, so treat it as a starting point.

Maintenance comparison

Petrol

Usually straightforward and widely understood by workshops. Routine servicing includes engine oil, filters, spark plugs and other wear items.

Diesel

CNG
